Figma Utilities Library
Overview
At my time at BCGX I was apart of many internal initiatives, one that I am especially proud of and which was a project I piloted, was a Figma Utilities Library. This library contained components and guides into how you can setup your Figma files. Components included e.g Context cards, Product Psychology Cards, Flow helpers, File Structure Overview Cards and etc.
I built library to help all of our designers when working with client to be more organised and provide the same level of service across projects.
Challange
Lack of consistency in design file organization across projects, as designers at BCGx structured their files differently.
Inconsistent service quality due to varying design delivery standards, impacting the efficiency and professionalism of client engagements.
No standardized library or guidelines, leading to inefficiencies in collaboration and handoffs between designers.
Recognized the need for a structured approach, leveraging my attention to detail and passion for organization to address this challenge.
Opportunity to create a centralized library and guidelines, ensuring consistency, efficiency, and improved design delivery across teams.
Solution
Developed and launched a structured design library for the BCG Design team, ensuring consistency across projects.
Created multiple structured components, including Context Cards, Product Psychology Cards, Flow Helpers, File Structure Overview Cards, Handover Documentation, and a Design File Thumbnail System.
Designed comprehensive guides and examples, outlining best practices for structuring design files at different project stages (Discovery, In Design, and Shipped Designs).
Enabled designers to easily integrate the library into their projects, allowing them to copy, publish, and use components directly from the asset panel.
Iterated on the library based on colleague feedback, adding new components and refining existing ones to better fit real-world use cases.
Positioned the library as a toolbox for all BCG designers, helping standardize design delivery and improve efficiency across client engagements.
Approach
Conducted one-on-one interviews with design colleagues to understand how they structured and organized their design files, gathering diverse insights.
Engaged with Product Managers and engineers to identify key expectations and pain points when navigating design files, ensuring a cross-functional perspective.
Drew from personal experience in design organization, combining insights from colleagues with my own structured methods to prototype various components.
Collaborated closely with a design colleague to refine and enhance the library, ensuring it was both practical and adaptable for different project needs.
Followed an iterative and feedback-driven approach, continuously refining the library based on real-world use cases and team input.
Created a tool that improved workflow efficiency and design consistency, enhancing the overall service quality and professionalism of BCGx’s design delivery.
Decisions
Initially designed the components with a rigid structure, enforcing a strict framework for organizing design files.
Discovered through conversations with product colleagues that design processes vary widely depending on the team, client, and problem space.
Recognized the need for flexibility, as a one-size-fits-all approach was too restrictive for the diverse range of projects at BCGx.
Shifted to a more modular design system, allowing components to be adaptable to different project needs while still maintaining structure.
Balanced flexibility with organization, ensuring that designers could customize the library while still benefiting from its consistency and efficiency.
Created a tool that enhanced the efficiency and effectiveness of the design team, improving workflow adaptability while maintaining high service quality.Result & Impact
